What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder that causes dramatic shifts in your mood, concentration, and energy levels. There are three types of bipolar disorder that affect adults and adolescents, including:

Bipolar 1 disorder

Bipolar 1 causes manic episodes that last for at least seven days, followed by depressive episodes that last for at least two weeks.

A manic episode causes extreme emotional highs and increased energy levels. A depressive episode features persistent feelings of low mood, sadness, and hopelessness.

Bipolar 2 disorder

Bipolar 2 causes a cycle of depressive and hypomanic episodes. Hypomania is a less severe type of mania.

Cyclothymic disorder

Cyclothymic disorder describes recurrent hypomanic and depressive symptoms that aren’t as severe or long-lasting as bipolar 1 or 2.

Recovery Psychiatric Services provides diagnostic evaluations and customized care plans for adults and adolescents aged 12 and up who have symptoms of bipolar disorder.

When should I schedule a bipolar disorder evaluation?

Schedule a bipolar disorder evaluation at Recovery Psychiatric Services if you or your child experience extreme mood swings that interfere with your daily life and relationships.

In addition to feeling hopeless or sad, depressive disorders can cause a loss of interest in activities, unintentional weight loss, and difficulty making decisions. During depressive episodes, there is also a risk for suicidal thoughts or actions.

Symptoms of manic and hypomanic episodes can include:

  • Euphoria
  • Increased energy
  • Racing thoughts
  • Excessive talkativeness
  • Impulsive or reckless behaviors

The team offers psychiatric evaluations to assess your symptoms and the impact they have on your life. They can also screen for anxiety and other mental health issues resulting from unmanaged bipolar disorder.

How is bipolar disorder treated?

Recovery Psychiatric Services offers customized care plans for adults and adolescents with bipolar disorder. The team typically combines medications and therapy to manage bipolar disorder symptoms in the long term.

Medications

Mood stabilizers and antidepressants can prevent the extreme mood swings of bipolar disorder. Typically, long-term medication use is necessary to balance your moods and prevent a relapse of symptoms.

Therapy

Psychotherapy and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) are an effective way to identify negative thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that occur with bipolar disorder. Therapy provides resources you can use to cope with your symptoms and the challenges bipolar disorder has on your life and relationships.
